Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Fairbanks

Situated at the heart of the Tanana River Valley, Fairbanks is a city that combines modern amenities with a quintessentially Alaskan frontier spirit. Commonly known as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” the second-largest city in Alaska has a colorful history dating back to the late 1800s and the discovery of gold in the area. Located close to the center of the state, Fairbanks has the widest temperature range of any city on Earth, with temperatures dropping below -65F (-55C) in the winters, and rising over 100F (38C) in the summers. After your arrival and private hotel transfer, the rest of the day is yours to relax or pursue any optional activities.

Overnight Fairbanks: Pike’s Waterfront Lodge or similar

Day 2 Fairbanks to Kantishna / Denali National Park

Driving Distance: 125 miles / 200 kilometers

From Fairbanks travel by private vehicle to the Denali Park Entrance. “Denali” means “the high one” in a local Athabascan dialect and it lies in the heart of the 600-mile long Alaska Range. Denali National Park is one of the world’s last great frontiers for wilderness adventure. Meet your lodge shuttle for the scenic journey through Denali National Park to Kantishna. Along the way watch for caribou, moose, grizzly bears, and Dall sheep. With luck you may also have views of mighty Denali – North America’s tallest peak.

This evening arrive at your accommodations, Kantishna Roadhouse. Located in the heart of Denali National Park, the Kantishna Roadhouse offers guests an unparalleled experience. The long summer days provide plenty of adventure during the day and relaxation in the evening, creating the ideal Denali experience for those who stay. An orientation and dinner will be provided upon arrival before settling into your cabins.

Overnight Denali National Park: Kantishna Roadhouse or similar (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 3Kantishna / Denali National Park

Various guided walks and hiking programs are available each day. Options will vary according to length and difficulty, so there is always something for everyone. Kantishna is rich is gold rush history and the lodge staff can provide the materials and tutorial for you to gold pan on your own. Other non-guided activities you can enjoy on your own include use of mountain bikes to explore the Denali park road or fishing rods and reels for you to try your hand at some catch-and-release fishing inside Denali National Park.

Evening programs often feature lodge staff or guest speakers to share information on topics such as photography, the aurora borealis, Denali expeditions, Kantishna’s gold rush history, or a myriad of other topics unique to Alaska. On clear evenings when Denali is visible, the lodge staff will provide a guided excursion to Wonder Lake for the opportunity to see majestic Denali in full color with the evening alpenglow.

Overnight Denali National Park Kantishna Roadhouse or similar (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Driving Distance: 237 miles / 379 kilometers

Depart the lodge early this morning by scenic bush flight. This 55-minute flight will take you past the Alaska Range, providing an up close perspective of the enormity of some of North America’s largest peaks.

At the park entrance board your luxury dome railcars for passage to Anchorage. Enjoy panoramic views of the passing alpine scenery and possible wildlife sightings. Travel through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, which is considered one of the most important agricultural areas in Alaska. Lunch and dinner are served onboard. In Anchorage a private driver will greet you for the short transfer to your hotel.

Day 5Anchorage to Kodiak Brown Bear Center (Monday/Thursday Arrivals)

An early morning breakfast will be served at your hotel. After breakfast meet your driver in the hotel lobby for a short transfer to the Anchorage Airport for your flight to Kodiak.

Known as the Emerald Isle, Kodiak Island is the 2nd largest island in the U.S. but is mostly uninhabited. Your lodge host will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your floatplane so you may see more of this spectacular area by air. A 30 minute flight will take you over small native settlements, lush green mountains, and the coast line. Touch down on Karluk Lake and the banks of Kodiak Brown Bear Center, in the heart of the 1.9 million-acre Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Karluk Lake is one of the most productive watersheds and home to one of the highest densities of brown bears in the world, including the world-famous Kodiak Brown Bear.

While this abundant habitat offers you the best opportunities to see these amazing creatures, all accommodations are located on Camp Island, providing a buffer from the generous bear activity around the perimeter of the lake. As an Alaska Native-owned property, it is the staff’s endeavor to share their Native Alutiiq heritage with you throughout your visit, imparting culture and history on you during your stay.

Overnight Kodiak: Kodiak Brown Bear Center (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6 & 7Kodiak Brown Bear Center

It is all about seeing the bears at Kodiak Brown Bear Center. As the area is a prime habitat for bears, your visit offers some of the best opportunities for bear viewing in Alaska. Starting at the beginning of August, the bear concentration is at its prime due to salmon runs entering the river systems throughout the region, and increasing the chances of seeing the bigger male bears (also called boars). The absolute peak for bear viewing times is between August and October.

Your highly-trained and experienced guides will take you to various viewing locations via a short boat ride. Each location offers a unique glimpse into the lives of these majestic animals. With a maximum of six guests at any one viewing area, you will immerse yourself into the bear’s environment for observation, study, and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of these legendary bears.

In addition to wildlife viewing, kayaking and hiking are also available. At the end of your day sit along the lakeshore and enjoy the sunset over the mountainside.
